As a young girl growing up in the Puno region of the Peruvian Highlands, Faustina Herma Roque Ticona—or ‘Herma’—helped her family raise alpacas. Her mother taught her to knit at an early age, using only sticks as knitting needles, along with a small, traditional hand loom. Over the years, Herma became an exceptional knitter, and has been handcrafting knits for INDIGENOUS since 2000.
Herma is a single mother and is glad for the security that steady work and fair trade wages provides for herself and her 3 children. Most of all she loves managing her own small hand-knitting workshop. Through good work, training and opportunities, Herma lifts the lives of other women in her Highland community.
